Our City of Downey
From early trails and agricultural roots to retail centers, parks, protective services, and community life, Downey continues to be a strong home base in Southern California.
A community shaped by land, movement, and opportunity.
Downey’s history begins with trails west, agricultural land, and the people who helped build the economic foundation of Southern California. Over time, the city grew through railroad access, business development, retail centers, schools, homes, parks, and local services.
The story in four chapters
A cleaner summary of the key moments that shaped Downey’s early growth and its identity as a strong planned community.
From trails west to an agricultural district
Downey was one of many towns to spring up along the thousands of miles of trails to the west. The city derived its name from John Gately Downey, an Irish immigrant who came to California during the Gold Rush and became Governor of California. He helped build the economic foundation of Southern California, creating a transition from open cattle range to an agricultural district of small farms.
Rancho Santa Gertrudes
In November 1859, Downey and James McFarland bought the 17,602 Acre Rancho Santa Gertrudes for $60,000. In 1873, a 96-acre parcel became the central district of a community called “Downey City,” known for favorable climate, fertile soil, and abundant water sources.
The railroad brings business momentum
In April of 1874, the people of Downey City heard the first whistle of a Southern Pacific train. The extension of the railroad through Downey brought people from across the country and helped unlock the business and agricultural potential of the land. Plots sold quickly, and a bustling business center was created at what is now Downey Avenue and Firestone Boulevard.
Downey becomes a planned community
At the beginning of the twentieth century, many pioneers had achieved success in business and politics. Downtown Downey included a Sunkist packing plant, department store, banks, restaurants, and mercantile shops. Later, light industry and tract homes replaced orange groves, and the city became one of the first suburban “planned communities” with quality homes, schools, and retail centers.
Downey’s growth has always been tied to connection.
From early agricultural development to downtown business activity and today’s neighborhood centers, Downey’s story is about people gathering, building, shopping, serving, and creating a strong local quality of life.
